The Cardboard Box You Cannot Throw Away

It’s a good box.

That’s the whole problem. It’s sturdy, it’s the right size, the flaps still close. It came with something expensive.

You cannot put a good box in the trash. That’s not who you are.

The Designated Box Location

It goes in the garage. Or the basement. Or that spot beside the dryer where boxes gather like they’re waiting for a bus.

You put it there “for now.” You tell yourself it’ll be useful — for moving, for shipping something, for storing something you haven’t identified yet.

That was fourteen months ago. It has since been joined by six others.

The Box Family Tree

There’s the big one from the monitor, which is too good to throw away and too big to use for anything.

There’s the shoebox, which is objectively useful and which you will never use.

There’s a nested set of three where you put the small one inside the medium one inside the large one, which felt like a genius space-saving move and actually just created one large box full of nothing.

And there’s one that’s slightly damp on the bottom for reasons nobody has investigated.

The Justification Engine

“What if I need to return the thing?”

The return window closed nine months ago. You know this. The box is no longer a return box. It has retired from that role and become an heirloom.

“What if I move?”

You are not moving. You have no plans to move. But if you did, and you didn’t have this box, imagine.

The Styrofoam Complication

The box came with molded styrofoam inserts shaped exactly like a device you no longer own.

You can’t throw those away either, because they’re inside the box, and removing them makes the box less of a box. They’re structural now. They’re part of the system.

The Purge

Someone finally makes you deal with it. A spring cleaning. A guest coming. A spouse with a firm tone.

You break them all down. It takes eleven minutes. It’s deeply satisfying. The garage looks enormous.

You feel light. Unburdened. Free of the boxes.

Four Days Later

A package arrives.

You open it. You take out the contents.

You look at the box.

It’s a good box.
