The Wet Towel Was Hung Up, Technically

It’s on the hook. It is touching the hook. By any reasonable definition, it has been hung up.

It is also folded over itself six times into a dense, heavy mass with 90% of its surface area pressed against other parts of itself.

Nothing in there is going to dry. Not today. Not tomorrow.

The Definition Dispute

One person believes a towel is hung when it is on the hook.

The other believes a towel is hung when it is spread across a bar with maximum airflow and no overlap.

These are two different religions and both parties think the other is being unreasonable. There is no resolution. There is only the towel.

The Second Use

You come back that evening. You shower. You reach for the towel.

It’s cold. Not damp exactly — cold, in a way that suggests it never got a chance.

You use it anyway, because the alternative is walking to a linen closet wet, and you will always choose the cold towel over the walk.

The Smell Timeline

Day 1: Fine.
Day 2: Fine. Maybe.
Day 3: There’s something. A note. Faintly like a basement.
Day 4: It’s not the towel’s fault. It never had a chance. It was folded in half on a hook in a room with no window and a fan nobody turns on.

You keep using it. You’ve decided the smell activates on the towel and not on you, which is not how any of this works.

The Bathroom Fan Question

There’s a fan. It runs on a switch next to the light.

Nobody uses it. It’s loud, it does nothing perceptible, and turning it on requires deciding to turn it on, which is a step too many at 6:40 AM.

So the room stays at 94% humidity for forty minutes after every shower, and the towel sits in that, folded, on a hook, marinating.

The Bed Discovery

Sometimes the towel doesn’t make it to the hook at all.

It ends up on the bed. On the corner. Where somebody set it down for one second.

You find it at 10 PM when you go to get in and there’s a cold wet rectangle on the comforter and now there’s a wet spot that will still be slightly cool when you fall asleep on it.

The Frequency Debate

“How often should you wash a towel?”

You look it up once. The internet says after three uses.

Three. You’ve been on this one for eleven days. You close the tab. You never look it up again.

The Fresh Towel

Laundry day. New towel. Fluffy, warm from the dryer, hung correctly on the bar with full airflow.

It is the single greatest luxury available in a normal life. Better than a hotel. Better than anything money can buy.

It stays that way for about four days.

Then somebody folds it in half and puts it on the hook.
